The current vintage of the red that is their first option to have with food is the 2016 Selección Especial, whose grapes are selected from terraced vineyards in the Montes Obarenes and the Sierra Cantabria, from vines averaging 35 years of age. It fermented in oak vats and matured in French oak barrels for 26 months, and it's kept in bottle for at least 18 months before it's sold. This is serious and has freshness and some restraint in the palate; it's much more expressive, floral and aromatic and with more-integrated oak than the wines from five+ years ago. It's a more elegant vintage than the 2015 and every bit as good, or a tad better. Winemaker Isaac Muga considers 2016 a very good harvest. It was bottled in April 2019. This is among the best vintages of Selección Especial
The 2016 Pintia comes from a cooler but drier vintage, and the wine has a little less alcohol and more freshness. It fermented in oak vats and matured in mostly new and mostly French oak, but this year they used a little more American oak with the idea to increase density. 2016 was an atypical year in Toro; they had plenty of time to pick the grapes with lower alcohol and wines with more elegance. This is clearly a more elegant vintage than 2015. The wine has some notes that took me to the Northern Rhône, and the oak is neatly integrated—it seems to get better integrated in cooler years. There is a mix of black and red fruit that denotes good freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, with a distinct lack of rusticity and density, and it's more fluid. It has abundant, chalky and fine-grained tannins and a supple, long and dry finish. 230,032 bottles, 6,517 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in May 2018.
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged for around 18 months in oak barrels, 40% new, the 2018 Tour Saint Christophe weighs in at 14.6% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with bold notions of baked black cherries, plum preserves and blueberry pie plus underlying suggestions of Christmas cake, Chinese five spice and dusty soil. The full-bodied palate packs in the black and blue fruit preserves layers, framed by velvety tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and spicy.
This is a final blend composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, with the Merlot harvested October 3-8 and the Cabernet Franc harvested on October 9. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Poesia opens with notes of baked black cherries, mocha, spice cake, redcurrant jelly and black raspberries with nuances of dried roses, aniseed, candied violets and Christmas cake plus a waft of molten licorice. Full-bodied, rich and packed with red and black fruit layers, it has a solid structure of firm, finely grained tannins and compelling freshness, finishing very long and layered.

There is more of everything in this 2016 Gran Enemigo Chacayes Single Vineyard. It's compact and seamless, with great purity, and more concentrated than the 2015 but with terrific balance, as the acidity (which is very high but you don't feel it) helps to counterbalance the massive palate and provide the necessary freshness. This is a beast that is going to age effortlessly for a good 15 years in bottle. All these wines age in used oak foudres for almost one-and-a-half years and are usually bottled around Christmas two years after the harvest. 5,000 bottles were filled in December 2018.
The 2015 Caiarossa is expressive and profound. A lot of dark fruit intermingles with spice and toast in what is an immediate and open wine. This is a complicated blend of Cabernet Franc (31%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (17%), Petit Verdot (11%), Sangiovese (10%), Syrah (9%) and Alicante (2%). The result is full, generous and tight but with a subtle tingle of volatile acidity at the close. Some 37,800 bottles were made.
The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a ripe and dark quality of fruit. These tones underline the slightly warmer growing conditions present on the southern side of the appellation where Col d'Orcia is located. That extra warmth is an important factor especially in a cool and soggy vintage such as 2014. This wine appears to have suffered less compared to its peers. The bouquet is layered with rich aromas of cured meat, spicy tobacco and moist potting soil that add to the weight and gravitas of the wine. This Brunello is compact and mid-weight in terms of texture. Some 200,000 bottles were produced.

Undoubtedly one of the top vintages of this wine, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau features classy notes of crushed stones and black tea to go along with ripe raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied yet silky, there's more power and richness in La Crau than in Piedlong, yet there's commensurate elegance and finesse. The wine grows in intensity on the finish without ever seeming heavy or overripe, instead offering hints of tea and licorice.
The 60/30/10 blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot in the 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Magari produces an expressive and opulent red wine, with great acidity and definition. The wine is firm and tightly wound, with secondary complexity that expresses itself in terms of tar, leather and spice. The tannins are supple and soft.
