An enticing and aromatic nose with mocha, clove, tar and perfumed violets. The palate is dense, ripe, plush and polished. Bold fruits, combine with spiced cedar and coconut, with the tannins ripe and tightly meshed. It's powerful and deep with a lovely silky, velvety finish.
2011 was a bit of a crazy season; September saw milder weather together with sporadic precipitation, which allowed the Cabernet Franc to complete the final ripening phase in a uniform fashion. This is confirmed by an incredible intensity of colour and extraction (30 days with fermentation and maceration) after five days of cold soak, before malolactic fermentation in 100% new French barrique. A restrained, sweet tobacco aroma dominates the nose, supported by dark cassis fruits and black pepper with cherry in depth. The wine is powerful, creamy on the palate with a thick, slightly angular finish underlined by moderate acidity. It shows great lenghth with cacao powder and fruit notes.
Amazing aerial freshness to the aromas - somehow both full-bodied but weightless with a perfect balance. This is silky smooth, a very elegant wine with a touch of blackcurrant to the raspberry fruits. The alcohol is warming on the finish however. Parcels of Grenache planted on lieux-dits Chapouin, La Janasse and La Crau, the oldest planted in 1912.
High-toned floral aromas and depth of fruit bodes well for future development. It's full-bodied, but with no heaviness. It has good acidity and some mineral hints on the long finish. Overall the impression is one of great freshness and purity, unforced and not over-extracted, showing perfect balance. Very good. Drinking Window 2019 - 2026.
Dark fruits, a little sombre right now, but with plenty of juice and a slate feeling keeping interest through the finish. Drinking Window 2023 - 2034
One of the best value grandes marques on the market, a blend of 60 crus, with roughly a third each of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay, vinified individually by cru and variety, in stainless steel. Compared to other grandes marques, it is high (40%) in reserve wines, averaging 10 years old and dating back to 1990. Quite a floral style with lemon sherbet intensity and bready, leesy characters. It has great concentration and complexity, with a lovely grip of acidity on the finish.
ColleMassari’s flagship 100% Sangiovese bottling is from Mt Amiata, overlooking Montalcino. Poggio Lombrone has not dissimilar weight to Montalcino’s Brunellos, but with a more tangy, playful juiciness. Its underlying depth has an airy quality as if the fruit were constructed with honeycomb-like layers. Smooth, memorable and enjoyable. Drinking Window: 2021-2035
The richer counterpart to Bin 128, this warm-climate blend of Barossa, McLaren Vale and Padthaway fruit (no Upper Adelaide or Wrattonbully fruit in this vintage) is a deep, primary dark ruby colour. And yet it's from a cool growing season, with the harvest finishing a month later than the previous year. It displays a subdued, spicy richness of aroma spliced with a hint of cooler vintage pepper. The palate though is typically generously fruited, with blackberry fruit infused with Penfolds’ trademark toasty vanillin American oak - an umami feel, it's underpinned by nicely resolved tannins that are very much present in the mouthfeel, gradually softening as the wine tapers towards its sumptuous conclusion. Bring on the chilli con carne or braised pork belly.
A blend of fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, this so-called ‘Baby Grange’ is matured for 12 months in American oak, partly in previous-vintage Grange casks. It has a very special quality on the nose, combining as it does both the cassis of Cabernet (54%) and liquorice-spiced dark fruit of Shiraz (46%), with a note of mint.and the veneer of vanilla oak. An Australian classic (dare I mention 'icon'...), it has a seductive sweetness and richness of spice-infused dark fruit on the palate, supported by a touch of mint and sweet vanillin oak, all silky-textured in this vintage. It's almost forward, suggesting early approachability and yet, deceptively, with a structure of firm tannins and a fine spine of acidity for good ageing potential. One for spiced duck breast or oxtail.
Juicy, ripe lime, with flint, nougat, cashew and complex phenolic chew. Acid backbone lends focus. Drinking Window 2019 - 2027.
Named after the Barossa sub-region of Marananga, with its rich red soils on the central valley floor, this Penfolds classic spends 12 months in a mix of American and French hogsheads and puncheons, giving this distinctively aromatic red the fragrance of spices. Beneath, concentrated, smooth and textured mulberry and dark berry richness shows youthful vigour, with a fine underpinning of toasty oak and dark chocolate. It has a youthfully tight spine of fresh, almost crisp, acidity assuring potential for lengthy cellar ageing. Home-made burgers and rump steak please!
